There are plenty of reasons why Thailand is such a beloved holiday destination for Aussies: it’s a relatively short direct flight, we enjoy an extremely favourable currency exchange, and perhaps most prominently, The Land of Smiles is one of the most hospitable places on Earth. Unsurprisingly, that internationally renowned hospitality has translated to four Thailand hotels being ranked in the World’s 50 Best Hotels.

Another reason Thailand might be on everyone’s mind is The White Lotus season 3, which was notably shot on location in Koh Samui and Phuket. For context, The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea saw a 386% increase in inquiries during the first season, while web searches for Italy jumped over 50% following the second season set in the San Domenico Palace. In other words, The White Lotus effect is very real.

But if the prospect of sharing a hotel with swarms of HBO devotees doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you’ll be relieved to learn there are literally dozens of world-class properties dotted around Thailand (from Bangkok to islands like Koh Kood or Koh Samui). To make your decision-making a little easier, we’ve assembled the following list of the best hotels in Thailand, guaranteeing a tropical getaway you won’t forget any time soon.

Four Seasons Resort, Koh Samui

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

The third season of The White Lotus was shot across a few sites, but predominantly in the lush Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui.

As you’d expect from a Four Seasons property, every detail has been considered, from the location of the hotel on a private peninsula, nestled within the serene northeast coast of the island, to the lemongrass-infused cold towels delivered to the poolside.

Boasting stunning views of the Gulf of Thailand, arrival to the hotel can be arranged via private jet, after which you’ll be welcomed to one of seven different villa types or six different private residence accommodations. Regarding your dining options, Koh Thai Kitchen serves up authentic southern Thai cuisine and there’s Pla Pla if you lusting after an oceanside grill; there’s also plenty to drink at one of three bars and lounges, including The Vault — Asia’s first and only dedicated rum library.

The team at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui have plenty on offer to kills the hours between dawn and dusk, including seven different boat tours, Muay Thai training for the whole family, a visit to the elephant sanctuary, golf, ATV riding, tennis, scuba diving, and much more. Though do note that Thailand is already bracing for a dramatic uptick in tourists off the back of The White Lotus, so if you’re thinking about Koh Samui, you’d better book soon.

Capella, Bangkok

best hotels thailand
Capella Bangkok

In 2024, Capella Bangkok claimed the World’s 50 Best Hotels throne — jumping from the 11th place honour it earned the year prior, and unseating Lake Como’s Passalacqua in the process.

Located on the banks of the majestic Chao Phraya River, it represents an oasis of calm within the chaotic bustle of the Thai capital, where guests can relax and unwind in relative proximity to the Siam Paragon luxury shopping district.

While it’s not exactly a boutique, its 101 different suites and villas are a far cry from the behemoths like Dubai’s Atlantis The Royal (795 rooms and suites); Capella Bangkok instead opting to focus on their warmth and intimacy of service.

The main restaurant is Côte by Mauro Colagreco, a two-Michelin star venue headed up by three-Michelin star chef Mauro Colagreco, which is supported by the home-style cooking of Phra Nakhon and the alchemic cocktails of the Stella bar.

Given it’s in the heart of Bangkok, it’d be unfair to expect the range of jetski and diving experiences offered by many of Thailand’s island resorts. However, as far as luxurious spa and wellness options, Capella Bangkok still delivers services including massage treatments, Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi, Anti-Gravity Yoga, BOGAFiT, and beyond.

If you want a world-beating experience in luxurious serenity, Capella Bangkok is a must-visit.

Amanpuri, Phuket

best hotels thailand
Amanpuri Phuket

Every empire begins with a single outpost, and for the Swiss-headquartered Aman Resorts — now boasting 35 properties in 20 countries — Amanpuri in Phuket was where it all began.

The location was originally selected as a holiday home for the group’s founder, Indonesian hotel magnate Adrian Zecha, but after some time, he decided to open a boutique resort that has since become something of a playground for the international elite.

Amanpuri’s Thai temple-inspired pavilions have become a blueprint for accommodations around Southeast Asia, though there’s nothing quite like experiencing the real McCoy — and the resort remains one of the very best in the world. Guests can expect unforgettable dining and drinking at any of the six different restaurants, bars, and lounges, which offer cuisine from traditions of Thailand, Japan, Italy, as well as the Mediterranean.

If you’re the type to have a hitlist of hotels to visit at least once in your life, Amanpuri should definitely be on the list (if it isn’t already).

Chiva-Som Hua Hin Wellness Resort, Hua Hin

Chiva Som Hua Hin

While the location of Phuket inspired Aman Resort’s creation, the Chiva-Som Hua Hin Wellness Resort was born directly from the private property of Boonchu Rojanastien — the former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and resort’s founder.

Resorts that claim to be wellness centres are a dime a dozen today, but when Chiva-Som Hua Hin opened its doors in 1995, the concept was in its infancy, making this resort one of the pioneers of health-focused hospitality.

With three decades of experience, you better believe they know what they’re doing, and today, Chiva-Som Hua Hin offers a dozen different rooms and suites alongside a smorgasbord of health and fitness services. These include wet-heat facilities, outdoor massage, a bathing pavilion, dance and pilates studios, a gym, and much more.

For anyone whose health is a priority this year, Chiva-Som Hua Hin Wellness Resort will leave you feeling better than you have in years.

The Siam, Bangkok

The Siam Hotel

Another property acknowledged in the World’s 50 Best Hotels, The Siam Hotel in Bangkok is a time capsule of Art Deco extravagance, enjoying three acres of verdant gardens located on the tranquil banks of the Chao Phraya River.

While it’s not as conveniently placed as the likes of Capella, the boat transfer to The Siam serves to set the scene as you step back in time.

There are seven different suites and villas — the most luxe of which are the riverside and courtyard pool villas — that offer slightly different takes on the monochromatic interior design. The Siam’s dining options include Chon Thai Restaurant and The Story House, serving Thai and international cuisines respectively; while The Pier is the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sunset, with the Bathers Bar situated next to the riverside pool perfect for enjoying a few hours in a sun lounger.

As a property that embraces the architectural past as much as it does modern standards for service, The Siam is another standout hotel among Bangkok’s competitive set.

Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Krabi

Phulay Bay Krabi

Located on the spectacular coastline not far from Krabi, Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is a secluded tropical paradise that blends the best of the Ritz-Carlton’s internationally celebrated service with Thailand’s jaw-droppingly beautiful beaches.

Guests are presented with the choice of eight suite and villa options that each offer something slightly different — be they pools, views or a 24-hour butler service — while the resort has three different restaurants to dine in.

In addition to the more formal restaurants, with menus that range from seafood and Mediterranean dishes to Thai cuisine, there’s also a dedicated lounge area and even a poolside venue serving guilty favourites like pizza and burgers. As you’d expect, there’s a spa and wellness centre, a gym, and a luxuriously proportioned outdoor infinity pool.

Paradise from the moment you check in to when you eventually wave goodbye.

best hotels thailand
Kiri Soneva Kiri

Only accessible via private plane or boat, Kiri Soneva Kiri is located within the beauty of Koh Kood Island, and is yet another perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

As anyone who’s enjoyed time at a Soneva property will attest, no detail is overlooked — from the personal butler service to the signature scent of tropical flowers wafting through the air, every need is thoughtfully anticipated and catered for.

The resort features an array of opulent villas and suites, each with a private pool and panoramic views of the Gulf of Thailand. The design of the property blends traditional Thai elements with modern, sustainable luxury, while the dining headlines are Kruua Mae Tuk and The View restaurants; which offer traditional Thai and a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian dishes respectively.

Beyond the promise of relaxation, Kiri Soneva Kiri also boasts a range of experiences for those hunting adventure, whether it’s exploring the island’s jungles on a guided hike, embarking on a private boat excursion, or diving in vibrant coral reefs.

One of the more affordable options on this list, Aleenta Retreat in Chiang Mai is tucked away in the serene countryside of northern Thailand, set against the stunning backdrop of lush mountains and rice paddies.
