The world’s first luxury hotel designed entirely by the late great Karl Lagerfeld is opening in June 2023. Simply going by the name of The Karl Lagerfeld Macau, the 271-room property will sit within the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau, offering what looks like a very unique experience set apart from the typical grand resorts and play-it-safe properties you’d often find dotted around the Las Vegas of the East.
Owners SJM Resorts reportedly worked with the legendary German designer extensively before his passing in 2019, making this a key piece of the designer’s legacy. And it’s being treated with the appropriate sense of occasion too, which a string of grand opening events being planned throughout June for anyone who happens to find themselves strolling around Macau next month.
The hotel is the last interior design project Kaiser Karl worked on before he passed away and from photos it looks like he has poured plenty of pizzaz and theatrics into this one, from the eccentric guest rooms and suites to the Mesa Restaurant, headed by renowned chef Jose Avillez, and a head-turning Book Lounge with 4,000 hand-selected tomes so guests have something more productive to do than waste away in the region’s many casinos.
Conceptually, The Karl Lagerfeld Macau is hinged on the designer’s imaginative take on modern Chinoiserie style, giving the hotel’s interiors a lavish 18th century feel with plenty of details touching on classic Chinese design mixed with modern Western aesthetics. Many large-scale installations and ornate touches can be found throughout the property, framing high-end amenities and custom-made pieces like coin-inspired headboards, extravagant chandeliers and circular room dividers mirroring traditional Chinese moon gates.
With Lagerfeld being celebrated widely this year, from TV shows to the Met Gala, the hotel’s opening seems to be a major part in firming the prolific German designer’s influence and instantly recognisable style. It’s also a strong mark towards the trend of super high-end hotels delivered by high-end fashion figures, following news that Bulgari is doubling down on hospitality with hotels in Rome and Tokyo.
The Karl Lagerfeld Macau’s top-tier offering is the 353 square metre Autograph Suite which has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a study, a living room, a massage room, a media room with – of course – a karaoke machine, and a large dining room. Butler service is expected here, alongside what is no doubt a lush turndown service and a 24/7 concierge.
The hotel, which was originally due to open in December 2021, opens in June 2023.
