Opening next year, almost exactly between The Pantheon and Trevi Fountain is Six Senses Rome, the latest ultra-luxury hotel to invest in the Eternal City. Not that Rome is particularly lacking when it comes to some of the biggest names in the hotel industry, from Sofitel and Anantara to St Regis and W, but the very first Six Senses hotel in Italy will be a very welcome addition to one of the world’s most endlessly fascinating cities, offering visitors an uncompromising city stay in the historic centre.
Fashioned as a tranquil oasis surrounded by some of the world’s most important monuments, Six Senses Rome carves out its own slice of history with a UNESCO-listed facade overlooking Via del Corso. Renowned Spanish designer Patricia Urquiloa has come on board to work up a frame of Travertine marble and oak wood details that are found throughout the interior.
Located in Palazzo Salviati Cesi Mellini, the building stands on the original 15th-century palace of Cardinal Giovanni Michiel. Given Urquiloa’s reputation for sustainable designs, we’re expecting a lot of heritage details to be retained throughout the Six Senses, from the 96 rooms and suites, each with Travertine limestone flooring, to the signature BIVIUM restaurant, helmed by Executive Chef Nadia Frisina, and NOTOS Rooftop Terrace.

Given its Six Senses, the spa will most likely be the most impressive part of the hotel. Plans have been inspired by the traditions of an ancient Roman bath house, worked into a holistic wellness centre featuring three plunge pools, a sauna, yoga deck, biohacking rooms and numerous meditation rooms.
“I am honoured and proud that this milestone is happening in my home city,” said the hotel’s General Manager Francesa Tozzi.
“My team and I are working with enthusiasm to translate the brand’s core values of emotional hospitality, sustainability and wellness into a Roman context. For us, high quality and luxury include out-of-the-ordinary experiences and respect for the local community while keeping things fun and quirky.”
Similar to brands like Belmond and Four Seasons, which already have an established presence in Italy, Six Senses has shaped its own guest program to offer experiences well outside of the hotel’s walls.
Staying at these high-end hotels throughout Europe always comes with unique ways to explore cities, and Six Senses Rome won’t be straying far from that rule with plans to take hotel guests behind the scenes of some of the most significant Roman cultural institutions, including Palazzo Colonna, Borghese and Doria Pamphilj. There should also be various premium food experiences, fashion experiences and art tours being offered to guests once the hotel opens in early 2023.
