- The Standard International hotel group makes its Australian debut, with the launch of The StandardX Melbourne.
- Only the second ‘X’ branded property to be opened, this boutique operation in Fitzroy contains 125 rooms in 7 different suite configurations, a “contemporary, uncomplicated aesthetic,” restaurant, rooftop bar, and ground floor retail space.
- The hotel opens this week, with rates starting at $224 per night. Book here.
Despite being one of Melbourne‘s best-known suburbs — just a stone’s throw from the CBD — Fitzroy is home to a relatively small number of international hotels. But Standard International is looking to change all that.
The American hotel group, most famous for its properties in London, Ibiza, and various locations around the USA, landed in Fitzroy earlier this week with The StandardX Melbourne.
Located on Rose Street, this new opening north of the river is a part of the group’s “rebellious younger” StandardX portfolio: a burgeoning nook in the group’s universe, soon to be occupied by The StandardX Bangkok.
While there might be some early, and undoubtedly amusing, confusion for locals (one of Fitzroy’s best pubs also happens to be called ‘The Standard’) the newly opened property enjoys 125 rooms and an overarching aesthetic that blends the grit of Fitzroy with modern comfort — courtesy of Hecker Guthrie.
Depending on what room you opt for, prices range between $244 to $329 per night.
The most modest 21sqm Cozy King room enjoys an ensuite bathroom and charming details such as a SMEG kettle and Frank Green French Press. If you’re after something a bit more substantial, the largest ‘Suite Spot’ room is 48sqm: also equipped with an ensuite bathroom, separate powder room, built-in bar, and lounge space.
Executive Chef Justin Dingle-Garciyya oversees the dining and drinking options, including BANG, an all-day Thai restaurant, and The Roof, an exclusive hideaway for hotel guests.
If you find yourself headed to Melbourne soon, now may be a good time to leave the city and post up for a weekend in Fitzroy.
