  • Three Hummock Island is a private stay like no other located just a short flight away from Melbourne and Tasmania.
  • This pristine retreat offers serenity and natural splendour in spades with no shortage of activities.
  • It’ll only set you back $750 per night (minimum: two nights) for up to four people; $150 per person + per night for every additional guest over the four included (maximum: 12 guests).

Travel ambitions are often so internationally slanted that we forget about the gems that exists in our own backyard. One such awe-inspiring reminder is Three Hummock Island.

Set upon 23,000 acres of lush rainforest found between Melbourne’s doorstep and mainland Tasmania (and not far from King Island), this is amongst the country’s most unique stays.

Not only does it boast one of the world’s purest environments complete with crystalline waters, white sandy beaches, inland lakes, and forests virtually unspoiled by human intervention — a nearby air pollution station in Cape Grim even validates the air as the world’s cleanest — but no permanent residents, settlements, nor shops exist here.

Guests are instead attended to by two caretakers during their time at Three Hummock Island, affording a level of privacy and serenity usually reserved for the 1%.

As for accommodation, you’ll find a cosy historic homestead built in 1910 overlooking Bass Strait. This charming, eco-minded abode features four bedrooms with three king size beds that can split into singles, as well as one room with bunk beds. In total, you’re looking at a maximum guest capacity of 12 (for comfort, you should be shooting for around eight).

There’s also two bathrooms, two living rooms, an indoor dining area, outdoor dining deck with coastal views plus an outdoor fire pit; as well as a fully-equipped kitchen and barbecue. Though if you’re not in the mood to prepare your own grub (or BYO supplies), do note a private chef and/or grocery delivery packages are available at an extra cost.

The island has exclusively partnered with renowned premium grocer La Manna & Sons to offer a selection of gourmet dining options.

To preserve Three Hummock Island’s in all its pristine splendour, power is provided through renewable sources such as wind and solar — high-drawing appliances such as electric kettles, toasters, or hair dryers being persona non grata — while water is provided through rain tanks and a nearby spring.

In terms of activities, aside from escaping off-grid to enjoy sunrises, sunsets, and even the Southern Lights from May to August, guests are encouraged to explore the natural surrounds via any of the following:

  • Bushwalking
  • Oyster harvesting
  • Kayaking
  • Birdwatching
  • Boat charters & fishing (abalone, crayfish tours can be arranged)
  • Snorkelling & swimming
  • Beachcombing
  • Photography
  • 4WD tours
  • Helicopter tours
  • Yoga & meditation

Three Hummock Island can be reached by air and sea: the easiest route being charter flights from both Melbourne (Essendon Airport) and mainland Tasmania. Upon touching down, guests are picked up at the airstrip by trusted transport partners and driven approximately 40 minutes to the homestead.
