For the second year running, London-based media company William Reed has published its list of The World’s 50 Best Hotels, and in 2024, the results look particularly rosy for Australia.

The Land Down Under has managed to nab not one, but two entries on the prestigious list (published by the same international body behind 50 Best Restaurants), with The Calile in Brisbane and The Tasman Hobart named the world’s #25 and #49 hotels, respectively.

Despite having dropped a few spots compared to its debut at #12 in 2023, The Calile remains a formidable presence in the 50 Best rankings. Offering “sun-soaked, chic Aussie hospitality,” it has again also been dubbed the ‘Best Hotel in Oceania’: an accolade that co-owner Catherine Malouf is justifiably proud of.

Pictured: Blending together the stylings of mid-century Miami and Brisbane brutalism, The Calile is again honoured (for the second consecutive year) as one of the ‘World’s 50 Best Hotels’.

“To have been selected two years in a row marks a significant affirmation of The Calile’s place on the global stage,” Malouf said, speaking from the annual 50 Best Hotels ceremony in London.

“This is a win for our team, our collaborators, our loyal guests and a win for Brisbane as a destination.”

Meanwhile, The Tasman makes its first-ever appearance on the coveted list: having been singled out by 50 Best jurors for its “sense of relaxed luxury” and seamless blend of “Georgian, [Art-Deco] and modern architectural styles.”

Journeying beyond Oceania, a large number of last year’s awardees are again making an appearance for 2024.

Notable standouts include Capella Bangkok, now crowned the World’s Best Hotel, and Atlantis The Royal, which soared up the rankings 35 spots to #9 this year.

Relatedly, it’s noteworthy that so many of the list’s uppermost spots are occupied by brands and/or properties based in Asia. Hong Kong is proving to be a dominant force: once again, the only territory to boast two hotels in the Top 10. Raffles Singapore (#6) and Aman Tokyo (#7) also make a welcome return.
