  • EVT and IMAX Corporation have announced IMAX Gold Coast will open its doors at Event Cinemas Pacific Fair on December 19th, 2024.
  • Replacing Queensland’s since-shuttered IMAX location at South Bank Cineplex (Brisbane), this marks the third national big-screen outpost.
  • IMAX Gold Coast is scheduled to launch with the global release of Mufasa: The Lion King.

From the ashes of South Bank Cineplex in Brisbane, the previous site of Queensland’s sole IMAX theatre, comes a new large-format cinema — only this time, it’ll be in the Gold Coast.

Come December 19th, 2024, you’ll be able to witness Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II and live-action prequel Mufasa: The Lion King in full 1.1:9 aspect ratio glory at Event Cinemas Pacific Fair, Broadbeach.

“At EVT, our vision has always been to provide experiences that escape the ordinary, and IMAX embodies that ethos,” said Daniel McCabe, EVT’s General Manager of Cinema Operations (Australia).

“Queenslanders have long desired an IMAX cinema, and we are thrilled to bring this incredible cinematic experience to the Gold Coast. With IMAX and Event Cinemas, we’re not just showcasing films; we’re inviting audiences to immerse themselves in a world of extraordinary storytelling and breathtaking visuals.”

The new state-of-the-art location will feature IMAX’s stunning 4K laser projection — powered by proprietary technology that delivers brighter images with increased resolution and deeper contrast — along with “enhanced acoustic performance” to place moviegoers right in the centre of the action.

Giovanni Dolci, IMAX Chief Sales Officer, added: “Australia boasts an exceptionally passionate moviegoing audience and 2024 has already become the highest-grossing year for IMAX in the country since 2016.”

“With audience demand at an all-time high, we couldn’t be more excited to bring The IMAX Experience to the Gold Coast. We’re grateful to expand our successful collaboration with EVT and Event Cinemas, who continue to invest in bringing the most premium cinematic experiences possible to Australian moviegoers.”

IMAX Gold Coast arrives a little over a year after the long-awaited reopening of IMAX Sydney, which kicked things off in spectacular fashion last year with another Ridley Scott flick — Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby — alongside Avatar: The Way of WaterBarbenheimer (Barbie Oppenheimer), as well as Taylor Swift’s Era concert tour movie.

Side note: that inventive Robbie Williams biopic Better Man might be one to keep an eye out for here in December/January.
