Prince of bangers Fred again… only recently got done with a brief Australian tour that was so wildly popular that by the time the British producer was done, he had become a household name. We’ve seen his name pop up more than a few times since then, between selling out Madison Square Garden with Skrillex and slow-dripping us new music every now and then.
We didn’t expect his latest move, however. That is, Fred again… has become the latest artist to take part in NPR’s long-running Tiny Desk Concert series. Given the Tiny Desk isn’t exactly known for hosting electronic music, it’s slightly awkward watching the man running solo around a stacked set-up, playing the piano, marimba, vibraphone, his beloved Maschine, and even using the desk itself as part of the production.
It’s a stripped-back, acoustic set from an electronic musician. Rare and insightful, validating the producer’s distinctive, sample-heavy approach to songwriting through songs like ‘Kyle (i found you),’ ‘Delilah (pull me out of this)’ and Faisal (envelops me).’
