The Golden Globes might be returning to its former glory in 2023 after being relegated to a sad mere Twitter thread this year, but don’t hold your breath for Ricky Gervais to return as the notoriously dull award ceremony’s acid-tongued emcee anytime soon (if ever).
A viral clip of Gervais scorching pretty much all of Hollywood captioned with “Retweet if you wish @rickygervais would host the Golden Globes again in 2023” has recently been doing the rounds. Attracting well over 37 million views – and with The Office (UK) creator explicitly tagged – naturally, it was only a matter of time before said tweet/clip caught his attention.
“Fuck that,” Ricky Gervais, 61, simply quote retweeted with a laughing emoji. No elaboration necessary despite the pleads from an entire legion of fans, like the certified GigaChad he is.

Ricky Gervais enjoyed a renewed sense of infamy/support from the general population after hosting the Golden Globes for the fifth and final occasion back in 2020. During an interview with The Guardian, he explained there was indeed a method behind his brutality.
“Do I pander to the 200 billionaires in the room or the 200 million people at home sitting in their [underwear] drinking beer who aren’t winning awards, who aren’t billionaires?” said Ricky Gervais.
“It’s a no-brainer for a comedian. I’m a jester. I play to the other peasants in the mud. I wasn’t going in terrible. Think of the things I could have said… Think of the fucking terrible things I could have joked about. It’s off the charts — It’s. Off. The. Charts — the terrible things I could say.”

Although that isn’t to say he didn’t have any supporters among the crowd of elites a la Johnny Depp after the demolition job Ricky Gervais exacted upon him circa 2011.
“Robert De Niro was just crying with laughter when I made a joke about Hugh Hefner and his young bride. He called me after a week and said: ‘I wanna say you did a great job.’ ‘Oh man,’ I said, ‘I annoyed some people.’ He said: ‘Fuck ’em, they were jokes.’”
The 2023 Golden Globes might be off the table (for the time being), but perhaps there may come a day where Ricky Gervais is called up to the big leagues for some iteration of the Academy Awards. Although let’s be real: the heightened level of self-congratulatory pleasantries probably isn’t his cup of tea.
